Following the firing of Sherrone Moore, the coaching hot stove is beginning to heat up. Who should be the next head coach of Michigan Football?
Dec. 10, 2025 was arguably the most shocking news cycle in Michigan football history. Sherrone Moore’s firing followed by his subsequent arrest shook the program and the college football world to its core. Here at Maize n Brew, we’ve covered the events and fallout extensively here and here and here, with undoubtedly more to come.
Today, we want to open the discussion up to you — who should replace Moore as Michigan’s head coach?
We already took an admittedly far-too-early stab at who we think Michigan should target. We also wrote about who Michigan should absolutely avoid. With that in mind, we want to hear from you — who do you think should get the job? Should Warde Manuel be the one making the call? Are you willing to wait for a college or NFL coach to conclude their season/playoff run?
The names that seem to be circulating the most in the public sphere are Kalen DeBoer (Alabama), Jesse Minter (Los Angeles Chargers), Kenny Dillingham (Arizona State), Jedd Fisch (Washington), Jeff Brohm (Louisville), Marcus Freeman (Notre Dame), Clark Lea (Vanderbilt), and Jason Eck (New Mexico), to name a handful. DeBoer is currently preparing his Crimson Tide for the College Football Playoff, while Minter is in the thick of the NFL playoff race. The rest of the coaches are either preparing for a bowl game or taking their ball and going home (Freeman).
Between uncertain timelines and the fact the transfer portal opens in three weeks, time is of the essence for the Michigan football program. However, the Wolverines have to get this choice right or it could set the program back significantly.
My personal preference is DeBoer. He’s clearly not a cultural fit at Alabama, as he tries to replicate the success Nick Saban had despite Saban’s successes coming in an era where schools like Alabama had significant advantages that the rest of college football didn’t. DeBoer is an offensive genius and would be Michigan’s best chance at retaining and developing Bryce Underwood.
My second option would be Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham. He’s done a masterful job of turning around Arizona State despite having limited resources. He’s also one of the youngest coaches in college football, so he could be around in Ann Arbor for a long time.
What are your thoughts? Who should Michigan target this late into the hiring cycle? Who should it avoid? Is your dream candidate realistic? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.
