Teddy Bridgewater, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup QB, guided Miami Northwestern to the 2024 Class 3A state title in his lone season as coach.
MIAMI — Teddy Bridgewater was back at Pitbull Stadium to watch Miami Northwestern in the Class 3A state championship game, but this time as a passionate fan and alumnus.
Bridgewater, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup quarterback, was the Bulls coach in 2024. He guided the team to a 12-2 record and the Class 3A state title and was named Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year.
Bridgewater currently is serving a one-year suspension for providing impermissible benefits to players last season, primarily spending $700 a week on Uber rides for players to get to and from practice.
Northwestern opened fall camp without Bridgewater, and the 33-year-old informed Bulls players on Aug. 4 that he would not coach the team in 2025. A day later, Bridgewater signed a one-year contract with the Buccaneers.
He explained his actions during his first press conference in Tampa Bay.
“I'm a father first before anything,” Bridgewater said. “And when I decided to coach, those players became my sons. And I wanted to make sure I protected them best that I can and that's how it came about.
“Miami Northwestern is in a tough neighborhood and sometimes things can happen when kids are walking home and things like that. So, I just tried to protect them and give them a ride home instead of having them take those dangerous walks.”
Northwestern (13-0) takes on Raines (13-0) in the Class 3A state championship at Pitbull Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 12. Northwestern beat Raines 41-0 in the Class 3A state title game in 2024.
