Rangers land Jansen, per reports

The Rangers reportedly have found their catcher

The Texas Rangers and free agent catcher Danny Jansen are in agreement on a two year, $14.5 million deal, per multiple reports.

Catcher was the one remaining spot among the position player group that the Rangers needed to address, and the 30 year old Jansen gives the team someone who can share the catching responsibilities with Kyle Higashioka. Jansen slashed .215/.321/.399 last season, splitting time between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers. He has a career .220/.310/.415 slash line and 100 wRC+. Jansen is not considered to be a good framer, but otherwise is fine defensively.

Less than half an hour ago, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon posted a notes column at the Athletic that mentioned that the Rangers were in contact with the agents for Victor Caratini and Danny Jansen. Interestingly, the Rangers were described as “actively trying to trade for a young catcher.” That makes sense, given the state of the catching situation on the farm, and I imagine that the Rangers will still be active on that front, particularly if they can find a catcher who they think would be ready to be in the majors by 2027.
