St. Michael Catholic (Ala.) head football coach Philip Rivers signed with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts earlier this week to their practice squad.
Now the Alabama high school football coach will be starting in an NFL regular season game on Sunday afternoon.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts are planning to activate the 44-year old Rivers off of the team’s practice squad and onto their active roster to face the Seattle Seahawks.
The future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback will be making his return to the National Football League after five years removed from his last snap back in 2020.
Rivers just completed his fifth season as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic, with the Cardinals’ season ending in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 4A state semifinals, losing to eventual champion Jackson, 44-23. The Cardinals finished the season with a 13-1 record and with the pieces returning on both sides of the ball, will be a favorite to win Alabama’s Class 4A in 2026.
In Rivers professional career in the NFL, playing from 2004 to 2020, throwing for 63,440 yards and 421 touchdowns between his time with the Colts and Los Angeles Chargers, respectfully.
