Brandon goes out on top.
After falling down 7-0 early on in the North Carolina 7A state title game on Friday night, Faizon Brandon and Grimsley High School ripped off two touchdowns to take control of the game. It was Brandon throwing a touchdown to tie it up, then he ran one in to take the lead. A pick six would ice the game later.
Grimsley took home the title with a final score of 24-14 in Chapel Hill. Brandon ended 12-15 for 118 yards through the air, adding 53 more on the ground.
Brandon finished up his high school career with a 35-1 record as a starter and two state titles at the second highest level of high school football in the state.
The 5-star prospect finished the cycle as the No. 2 overall player in the class of 2026. An injury suffered in the season opener sidelined him for nine games, but he returned and finished strong. Brandon threw just ten interceptions in his three-year career as a starter.
Brandon will now get set to join Tennessee for bowl practices, getting his feet wet with the offensive staff in preparation for spring. It’s still unclear what the quarterback room will look like for the Volunteers going into next season with Joey Aguilar set to battle it out in court with the NCAA for another season. We do know, at least for now, George MacIntyre and Jake Merklinger will be a part of the equation. Should Aguilar not get another season, things could get interesting — and Brandon would certainly be a part of that battle.
Josh Heupel’s first 5-star quarterback at Tennessee ended up not going so well, by no fault of his own. His second features a guy that’s much closer to home. Brandon will certainly have plenty of eyes on him in the next few weeks during bowl practices and in the spring.
