Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has once again highlighted the immense significance of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), emphasizing its special value for African players in statements made from Europe.

The Belgian coach, who is of Congolese descent, stressed that this continental tournament cannot, under any circumstances, be downplayed, given its sporting and symbolic importance across the African continent.

The Africa Cup of Nations is the oldest continental competition in African football. It was launched in 1957 in Sudan, with the participation of four founding members of the Confederation of African Football, without a qualification phase. The idea for the tournament was conceived during the FIFA Congress held in Lisbon in 1956, before becoming the continent’s flagship football event.

Regarding the departure of African players based in Europe to join their national teams, Kompany affirmed that the Bavarian club fully supports its players’ international commitments. He specifically noted that Senegalese striker Jackson will join the Senegal squad after the match against Mainz 05.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Bayern Munich vs. Mainz fixture, Kompany said: “My information is that he will leave with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations after the match against Mainz. We hope he goes as far as possible.”

He added: “Of course I want Congo to win, but if not, I wish him all the best. For African players, the importance of this competition should never be underestimated.”
