Summerfield and Erie Mason girls basketball and Bedford's boys basketball won games Saturday while the Milan and Erie Mason-Ida swimmers took second.

PETERSBURG – Jaeli Jones refused to let Summerfield’s girls basketball team lose.

The senior scored 9 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs held off Ann Arbor Skyline for a 47-39 victory on Saturday, Dec. 13.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. “Skyline is a very physical team and made things tough for us. Jaeli Jones was huge for us in the fourth quarter.”

Elena Miller scored all 8 of her points in the second half and grabbed 5 rebounds for the 3-0 Bulldogs.

Makenzie Wolfe added 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

First win for new coach

TOLEDO – Erie Mason secured its first win under new coach John Kenger, dispatching Maumee Valley Country Day 44-18 Saturday.

Zoie Stubleski scored 14 points and Paige Konrad tossed in 8 to lead the 1-2 Eagles.

Bedford offense limited

MORENCI – Anna Gray scored 14 points and Sienna May added 11, only one other Bedford player scored in a 38-30 loss to Morenci Saturday.

The Mules (1-1) trailed 20-10 at the half and never recovered.

Barath leads Bears

NEWPORT – Jefferson managed just 13 points through the first three quarters of a 42-22 loss to Riverview Gabriel Richard Saturday.

Sophomore Jaelyn Barath scored 9 of her 11 points in the second half for the 0-2 Bears.

Injury hurts Milan

WHITMORE LAKE – Emily Bladen scored 17 points, but it was not enough for Milan (0-3) in a 47-22 loss to Whitmore Lake Friday night.

“Emily was playing well until she injured her ankle mid-thirdquarter and did not return to the game,” Milan coach Phil Freeman said.

Slow start stalls Whiteford

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford, playing its third game in five days, managed just 12 points in the first half of a 60-30 loss to Evergreen (Ohio) Saturday.

“Evergreen is a very solid team with lots of strong pieces,” Whiteford coach Nick Kopp said. “We came out flat and then they never looked back.”

Avy Wood hit all five of her free throws and scored 11 points for the 0-3 Bobcats.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bedford spreads wealth

ROSSFORD – Corbin Miller scored 19 points, Ish Hakki 15 and Nick Coberly 12 as Bedford tripped Rossford (Ohio) 54-48 Saturday.

“Our first half defense was tenacious, holding Rossford to 13 points on only 3 made shots (in the first half),” Bedford coach Nick Brillhart said. “However, Rossford opened the third quarter on a 15-2 run to take the lead.”

The lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter before Hakki and Payton Sheaves hit timely 3-pointers to put the 2-1 Mules in charge.

PREP SWIMMING

Milan finishes second

MILAN – Milan scored 368 points to finish behind Adrian (406) in Saturday’s Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League Red Relays.

Bedford placed third with 298.

“We were battling illness for our athletes all week, but had most of them back for the meet,” Milan coach Dan Heikka said. “The boys really stepped up and executed the races well.”

The Big Reds were second in the 200 freestyle relay with Reed Neuvirth, Landon Brice, Owen Stripp and Dylan Nichols.

Mason posts best finish

DUNDEE – Erie Mason-Ida won the 200 medley and 600 freestyle relays to secure second place in the Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League White Relays Saturday.

“This is the best finish at the relay meet since I have been coaching,” Mason-Ida coach Andy Mosley said.

The medley relay of Bowie Jacobs Jared Tunison, Brandon Tross and Brenner Nelson hit a state-qualifying time and Tunison qualified for state leading off the 600 relay with Tross and Nelson.

Riverview won the meet with 434 points and Mason finished with 304. Monroe was third with 276, Dundee fourth with 254, New Boston Huron-Taylor seventh with 76 and Flat Rock eighth with 48.

Jayce Hay, Reuben Green, Josh Riggs and Garren Hoskins won the 200 freestyle relay and Aaron Brewer and Kylor Freshour of Dundee ruled the diving relay.

PREP WRESTLING

Dundee takes two

SAND CREEK – Dundee won two tournaments in one day Saturday.

While the varsity team was capturing the championship of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Invitational, the B team ruled the Sand Creek Holiday Tournament behind champions Blake Hensen (106) and Brock Miller (215).

Josh Foster (132), Scott Kohlman (144) and Price Johnson (150) were scond and Jack Weslow (126) and Max Motylinski (113) were third.

All three Dundee girls placed at the Allen Park Tournament. McKenzie Mantei (100) and Mattie Mckart (110) won championships and A'Zaria Lane (heavyweight) was third.

Skowronski, Sindone second

WYANDOTTE – Wally Sindone (126) and Michael Skowronski (138) of Gibraltar Carlson were second in their weight classes at the Wayne County Championships Saturday.

Carlson scored 172 points to finish second in the team standings behind Westland John Glenn (228).

Luke Guffey (165) and Josh Beach (285) were third and Jacob Morris (190) placed fourth.
