Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso spoke to the media just before his side begin their Copa del Rey campaign away against Talavera, a fixture that carries both opportunity and risk.
Despite the apparent gap between the two teams, the Madrid coach made it clear that the competition demands total respect, focus, and the right mentality from the very first minute.
Alonso underlined why Real Madrid cannot afford to underestimate this stage of the tournament.
“We always know that the Cup is a special competition. It allows you to face teams like Talavera, but it’s also a competition where there can be big surprises.
“We’re going into it with the same respect and preparation as always. We’re ready.”
The Real Madrid coach was also asked about the ongoing Negreira case and did not deviate from the club’s official position.
“We share the position of the club and the president. The most important thing is that, for the good of soccer, the truth about what has happened comes out.”
On Endrick and Mbappe
On squad management, Alonso addressed Endrick’s situation while refusing to offer tactical hints to the opposition.

“You know I don’t like to give too many clues to the opposition. He’ll be in the squad, of course.
“We’re not thinking about after the break: we still have Talavera and Sevilla to play, and we’re counting on everyone. ‘Bobby’ certainly has options.”
When asked whether the squad is showing greater involvement during a demanding period, Alonso dismissed the suggestion of any recent shift and highlighted unity.
“That’s your interpretation. From the inside, we have always fought for the same goals. We know that there are good moments and not-so-good moments. And unity is essential.
“We are getting to know each other better, we all know what moments there are. The focus is on what’s coming in the next four days, on finishing well before the break. Always with the ambition to improve.”
Questions quickly turned to Kylian Mbappe and whether the French star would be rested for the Copa opener.
“Giving Mbappe a rest is not part of the discussions. We always talk about fielding the best team.”
On the level of referees
Alonso also responded to the referees’ statement against Real Madrid, defending the club’s right to speak out.

“It’s legitimate for everyone to defend their interests. Anyone who feels aggrieved should speak up. That’s exactly what we’re doing.”
Expanding on refereeing standards, the Madrid coach highlighted why the situation in Spain has raised eyebrows abroad.
“There’s a bit of everything in every league. As humans, we all make mistakes. But this is a case that needs to be investigated.
“What has happened here is surprising abroad, as there have been no consequences or accountability. It’s not normal, it can’t be taken lightly.”
Regarding his relationship with the board, Alonso was keen to stress stability and alignment.
“The situation, before and after, remains the same. We maintain good communication. We’re in this together, each with our own roles.”
On Valdepenas and his debut
On youth development, Alonso praised Victor Valdepenas’ debut and reiterated his belief in giving opportunities when the moment is right.
“I think Valdepenas’ debut was very good news. Historically, I have seen and experienced that many players who have been in the right place at the right time have been able to seize the opportunity.
“I was very happy for Victor and congratulated him because he helped us win the game. I think there will be more opportunities.”
Reflecting on his own evolution since taking charge, Alonso admitted that the learning process has been constant.
“The Xabi who arrived in June is not the same as the one now. Essentially, yes. But I’ve learned things, I’ve had to adjust things about myself, and there’s been progress.”

He also singled out Rodrygo for praise following back-to-back goals and his growing tactical importance.
“Rodrygo has been great news. Not only because of his goals, but also because of the role he’s playing as a fourth midfielder or third striker.
“Those positions are a little bit undetectable because of his quality. He’s giving us defensive balance.”
Finally, Alonso opened up about the personal demands of the role and how he experiences both the highs and lows.
“This position requires you to know what you have to do at all times. I enjoy this opportunity, in good times and bad. It’s a source of pride.”
Looking ahead to the challenge posed by Talavera, the Real Madrid coach closed with a clear objective.
“It’s a game you have to prepare for mentally because the situations are different. We don’t want any surprises; we want to be reliable.
“Tomorrow, we want to field a competitive team so we can advance.”
