Joshua Kimmich discusses Bayern Munich’s newfound knack for conceding goals

FC Bayern hasn’t looked the best for a couple months now

Bayern Munich remains undefeated in the league and only tasted defeat just once so far in the season, but there’s a catch. The Bavarians now have a fondness for conceding the opening goal or just conceding silly goals, sometimes dropping points in the process. Joshua Kimmich discussed this new phenomenon with Bild (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia).

“We were very, very often behind in recent weeks. There are always situations we can defend better. Especially set pieces – we have to defend them better”, Kimmich stressed. “We also need to concede fewer chances, meaning fewer corners, fewer free kicks, fewer throw-ins. We definitely need to improve on that so we don’t go behind so often.”

The 30-year-old also pointed out that his team can’t really finish the game off earlier, which is a far cry from the Bavarians’ ruthless form earlier in the season. “I also have the feeling that we haven’t been able to decide games as early anymore”, he continued. “We often had a big lead at halftime at the beginning of the season. We haven’t managed that so much now. In the future, we need to play in a way that allows us to decide games earlier. If you don’t decide games, they simply remain open. Then anything is possible in football – either through a set piece, a long ball, or a superb pass.”

Another issue for Bayern is player workload. Several players are being played in consecutive games and introduce fatigue and reduced performance. By finishing games off earlier, it allows players to get subbed off and gather any amount of rest they can. The business end of the season begins in a few months, so the Rekordmeister needs its men to be in top shape.
