Zeeland East boys, girls sweep Forest Hills Central; Zeeland West wins

Check out a roundup of the Monday and Tuesday high school boys and girls basketball games.

The Zeeland East boys basketball team used a late surge to beat Forest Hills Central 72-52 on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Will Drnek led the Chix (2-2) with 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds. He was 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

Caleb Claerbaut had his first double-double of the year, scoring 20 points with 10 rebounds. Claerbaut added three assists and two blocked shots. Josiah Norman added a double-double of his own, scoring 14 points with 11 rebounds. Isaiah Boonstra tallied nine points and grabbed six rebounds while sophomore Isaiah Beckum, in his first career varsity start, scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds.

The Rangers dropped to 3-1.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Unity Christian 64, Hamilton 45

The Hawkeyes were outscored 18-6 in the first quarter and couldn't recover.

Garner Hulst had eight points, while Hudsen Hulst, Andrew Plockmeyer and Weston Meiste each added seven.

Coloma 66, Black River 33

The River Rats dropped to 0-4 the SAC defeat.

Jamison Huizenga led the Rats with 11 points and four rebounds. Isaac Foreman chipped in seven points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Zeeland West 48, Holland 26

Zeeland West outscored the Dutch 18-2 in the second quarter.

Sadie Kragt led the Dux with 12 points. Jenna Hendricks scored 11 and Brailey Bursley added seven.

Miona Rodgers scored 10 to lead Holland while Maggie Telgenhof added eight.

Zeeland East 33, Forest Hills Central 31

The Chix (2-2) hung on for a non-conference win.

Lizzie Risdon scored 15 points and Lily Huizenga added nine.

South Christian 57, Holland Christian 47

The Maroons were outscored 22-11 in the second quarte of the non-conference loss on Monday, Dec. 15.

Kate Van Appledorn led Holland Christian (2-1) with 16 points. Allison Lamer had eight and Brooklyn Phelps added seven.

Saugatuck 53, Benton Harbor 15

The Trailblazers put Monday's game away early with a 23-7 run in the first quarter.

The Saugatuck defense allowed just eight points in the final three quarters.

Talia Laskowski had 20 points and anchored the defense with several steals, while Mylah Simpson had 18 points.

Unity Christian 52, Hamilton 22

The Crusaders build a 12-5 lead after the first quarter and didn't look back.

Leah Brink led the Hawkeyes with six points.

South Haven 58, Black River 41

The River Rats lost the SAC showdown on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

The Rats were paced with 15 points from Delyla Martinez and eight from Sawyer Hamberg.
