Marc-André ter Stegen was praised by coach Hansi Flick for his performance in a return to the Barcelona goal after seven months but at the same time he can not expect more playing time.

German international Ter Stegen played in Barca's 2-0 Copa del Rey victory at third division Guadalajara on Tuesday night, making two crucial saves in the closing stages.

It was the captain's first match since May 18 as he underwent back surgery in July.

"Marc is the captain for me. It was a good opportunity for him, he has given the club a lot. We talked to the coach staff and decided that he should play. But only this one match," Flick said.

Flick has made it clear that summer signing Joan Garcia is his number one between the posts.

Ter Stegen has been at Barca since 2014 and there is speculation that Barca want to sell him to get him off the payroll.

Ter Stegen needs playing time to remain first choice national team keeper for next year's World Cup. Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann deputized well for him in World Cup qualifying.

"Marc must either establish himself at Barcelona or find a club where he can play," Germany cosch Julian Nagelsmann said recently.
