Marc Guehi has become one of the most coveted players among Europe’s elite heading into the new year.

The Crystal Palace defender will see his contract expire at the end of the season and has already confirmed that there will be no renewal, leading to strong interest from multiple top clubs.

FC Barcelona, for one, are among the suitors of the England international, along with arch-rivals Real Madrid, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, and Premier League title-holders Liverpool.

Liverpool’s plan to see off competition

Now, according to AS, Liverpool are planning to make a move for Guehi in the upcoming January transfer window itself, to beat Barcelona and other suitors to the player’s signing.

The Reds came very close to signing the 25-year-old centre-back during the summer transfer window. An agreement was in place and everything appeared to be on track for the move to go through before Crystal Palace ended up pulling the plug on the deal.

However, with the defensive line struggling this term, Arne Slot & co. are looking for reinforcements and could move to sign Guehi in January itself.

That way, Liverpool would strengthen their backline and ensure that they avoid a summer battle for his signing on a free transfer when his contract expires.

It must be noted that Barcelona’s priority, as things stand, happens to be a left-footed centre-back, with names like Nico Schlotterbeck and Pau Torres being lined up as targets.

However, a player of Guehi’s pedigree and quality is a market opportunity too good to pass up for Deco & co.

Signing him for free in the summer of 2026 can be an excellent piece of business, but Liverpool could spoil those plans by moving for him next month.
