TYLER, Texas (KETK)– An East Texas doctor shares a possible timeline for Patrick Mahomes after successful knee surgery on Monday.
After managing to stay free of long-term injuries during his NFL career, former Whitehouse Wildcat and 3x Super Bowl Champion Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL on Sunday afternoon.
With two minutes left in Sunday afternoon’s game, Mahomes was scrambling to his right, and his left knee buckled.
After his successful surgery on Monday, the team reports that he will begin his recovery immediately.
“You probably won’t be putting weight on that leg for about 4 to 6 weeks, but and then you’ll start working on a range of motion pretty much right away,” Chief of Sports Medicine, Dr. Jayesh Patel, UT Health East Texas.
Dr. Patel said surgery doesn’t usually occur the day after a ligament is torn, but early surgery suggests minimal swelling in Patrick’s knee.
“He’s an amazing athlete. I would suspect within 9 to 10 months he’d be back, kind of, he’ll probably catch up to a normal ACL tear rehab-wise after the first couple of months,” Patel said.
This is the first time the Chiefs have been eliminated in the playoffs in the Mahomes era, and it is uncertain when he will take the field next season.
“It works out to their advantage because they can take their time, do what they need to get him back, because even if he came back second or third game of the season, you still got plenty of season to get back into playoff contention,” Patel said.
Former Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons tore his ACL on Sunday, but could be back by next season as well.
He is home in Dallas, but his team reports he has not undergone surgery yet.
