Newcastle United defeated Fulham 2-1 on Wednesday night to progress to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
The St James’ Park encounter looked to be heading for penalties after Sasa Lukic cancelled out Yoane Wissa’s opening goal.
But Lewis Miley popped up with a stoppage-time winner to seal his team a place in the final four.
However, the victory was marred by an injury to Tino Livramento, who was forced to leave the pitch late in the game.
It appeared to be another knee issue, with manager Eddie Howe replacing the defender with youngster Alex Murphy in the 76th minute.
Howe could not allay the fears of Newcastle supporters in his post-match press conference, saying: “It doesn’t look good. The fact that he came off is a worrying sign. We’re so stretched in that area that it would be a huge blow.”
Livramento has already missed eight weeks of action this season due to a knee ligament injury.
He returned to the team at the beginning of November, starting the last eight matches across all competitions.
But he now faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a knee problem on Wednesday.
Newcastle already face plenty of injury issues, with Dan Burn, Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and William Osula all confined to the infirmary at the moment.
Livramento’s injury means Howe will have no choice but to use Murphy at left-back, with Lewis Miley playing on the right.
It is not ideal, but the two young players could step up and prove their abilities.
Newcastle will welcome Chelsea to St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday.
