South Carolina running back Oscar Adaway III has filed a criminal complaint accusing a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper of assault following an on-field incident during the Gamecocks’ game at Texas A&M on November 15.
The moment went viral on social media during the first half of the game at Kyle Field. After South Carolina wide receiver Nyck Harbor scored a long touchdown, video showed a uniformed trooper making contact with Harbor near the sideline and appearing to shout at him. Adaway, who was running next to Harbor, was also bumped and confronted by the trooper.
According to The Washington Post, Adaway filed a criminal complaint on Dec. 12 alleging assault. His attorney, B. Keith Jackson, told the newspaper that the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the complaint and considering whether to pursue charges. The trooper involved has not been publicly identified.
Jackson said Adaway and his family have experienced significant emotional distress in the weeks following the incident. The Post reported that Adaway sought treatment from a psychiatrist and also contacted the Texas A&M Police Department to report what he described as an assault by the officer.
Neither Texas A&M nor the Texas Department of Public Safety has publicly commented on the complaint. Texas A&M police confirmed the trooper was removed from his post during the game to cease further contact between the parties.
The incident renewed discussion of law enforcement's role and conduct on college football sidelines, particularly during emotionally charged game situations. Adaway has not spoken publicly about the complaint. South Carolina has also yet to release a statement though Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer did comment, stating "I appreciate them handling that the right way and sending him home."
Kyle Field will host this weekend's College Football Playoff first round game between Texas A&M and Miami.
