Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens next month, thinning an already unsettled quarterback room for new coach Alex Golesh.
Daniels announced his decision Sunday on social media after starting three games for the Tigers during the 2025 season. The former Stanford transfer preserved his redshirt by sitting out one game but will play his final collegiate season elsewhere.
“I promised a return to this amazing place, but things didn’t work out how I thought they would,” Daniels wrote on Instagram.
Daniels’ departure comes alongside Jackson Arnold’s intention to enter the portal, leaving Auburn with just one scholarship quarterback on the roster: rising redshirt freshman Deuce Knight, a former five-star top-50 national recruit. With limited depth at the position, Golesh and his staff are expected to be active in the transfer market.
The transfer portal window will run from Jan. 2 through Jan. 16 after the NCAA eliminated the spring portal period, increasing the urgency for teams still searching for quarterbacks.
Daniels stepped into the lineup during Auburn’s win over Arkansas and went on to start games against Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Alabama. Following Hugh Freeze’s dismissal, Daniels accounted for more than 400 total yards and four touchdowns in an overtime loss at Vanderbilt.
For the season, Daniels threw for 797 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 280 yards and two additional scores.
Known for his mobility, Daniels previously produced more than 5,000 yards of total offense at Stanford. His best performance at Auburn came against Vanderbilt in early November, when he totaled more than 400 yards of offense with four touchdowns in a dramatic overtime defeat.
Daniels showed flashes of his potential as a full-time starter, but will now look to showcase that ability elsewhere in 2026.
