Two Texas Panhandle basketball coaches reach career win milestones

Palo Duro's AJ Johnson and West Plains' Kendall Cogburn achieved career win milestones in the same month.

As high school basketball season continues across the Lone Star State, two head coaches in the Texas Panhandle have celebrated career milestones early in the season.

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, longtime Palo Duro girls basketball coach AJ Johnson earned his 600th career win with a 41-38 victory against District 3-5A opponent Lubbock-Cooper.

Johnson, the father of former Dons star and Oklahoma Sooners guard Austin Johnson, was given a plaque for his 300th win by his daughter, and was gifted a similar plaque by his granddaughter after securing his 600th victory as a head coach.

Johnson's daughter and granddaughter both contributed to his remarkable win total on the court, as well.

Johnson played basketball at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and was inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. This season, the Lady Dons hold a 16-3 record and sit at No. 22 in the state among Class 5A girls teams in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Top 25 rankings.

A week later, West Plains boys basketball coach Kendall Cogburn earned his 250th career win as the Wolves took down Frenship 80-42 on Dec. 16. West Plains is 11-2 this season, and was ranked the state's No. 14 Class 4A squad in TABC's most recent poll.

Cogburn played high school basketball at Shamrock before transferring to Randall, where he played for legendary Raiders' coach Leslie Broadhurst. After a strong high school career, Cogburn played basketball for Wayland Baptist and West Texas A&M.
