Thomas Müller says Florian Wirtz would be under more pressure if he moved to Bayern Munich instead of Liverpool

Did Wirtz make the right choice FC Bayern for LFC?

In a long interview with SZ, former Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Thomas Müller touched on a number of topics, one of which happened to concern Florian Wirtz and his struggles at Liverpool FC. Müller said he preferred the close media scrutiny at FC Bayern compared to being a player abroad at an EPL club.

Here is the relevant excerpt from the interview:

Are you annoyed that you didn’t take this step abroad earlier?

No! I wouldn’t want to miss a single second of my time at Bayern. Nowhere else are you in the melting pot of attention as much as you are as a national player in Munich. I loved that so much, in good times and bad.

Take Flo Wirtz, who took an international step with his move to Liverpool. At Bayern, he would certainly have had an easier time adapting to the game, as he would have remained in the same league…

…things aren’t going so well for him at Liverpool at the moment.

That’s true. But it’s nowhere near comparable to the media attention you get as a player when things aren’t going well for you at FC Bayern. You’re in the spotlight every day. As a foreigner, you’re just not talked about as much!

It seems that Müller is subtly hinting that Florian Wirtz made the wrong choice to join LFC instead of Bayern Munich. Not only is it harder for him to integrate there, the spotlight is also smaller — making it tougher to be the man in the limelight.

You can be sure that if Wirtz had the kind of start he’s had at Liverpool while playing for Bayern, the German media would be all over him. In England, the press haven’t exactly been kind to him, but he’s not the sole lightning rod for their attention — players like Mohamed Salah and Aleksander Isak have drawn their fair share of criticism.

Did Wirtz really make a mistake, then? Well, if he goes on to regain his form and composure before the World Cup, then he won’t worry too much about rejecting the Bayern move. However, if things don’t improve and Arne Slot’s team continue their doldrums, regret might someday set in.
