PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — High school baseball, soccer and track teams from the past are headed into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame.
The Eureka girls cross country teams from 2002-03, the 2004 Notre Dame boys soccer team and the 2006 IVC baseball teams have been voted into the hall, the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame board announced Monday.
The teams will be honored at an induction dinner on March 21 at the Peoria Civic Ballroom. Ticket prices will be announced at a later date.
The 2002 Eureka girls won the class A state championship and then 2003 team was the state runner-up. Abby Heinold, who won 14 state medals in her career, was one of the stars of the Hornets that were a part of both those teams.
The 2004 Notre Dame soccer team earned the school its first of five state championships. The Irish, who finished that season 24-2-2, beat Sycamore 3-2 in four overtimes to win the class A state title that fall.
The 2006 IVC baseball team were led by future big league pitcher Zach McAllister. That team won a school record 40 games on the way to the class A championship.
The rest of the Hall of Fame class and the annual Tri-County sports awards winners will be announced by the GPSHOF board in January.
