The Wave add defensive depth with the 20-year-old left back
Defender Mimi Van Zanten signed a two-year contract with San Diego Wave FC through the 2027 season with options for 2028 and 2029
Van Zanten won two NCAA championships with the NCAA Women’s Soccer powerhouses, Florida State University. There she made 57 appearances across three seasons primarily as a left back.
“Mimi is a talented young defender who has already experienced success at the highest levels of the collegiate game, and we’re excited to welcome her to San Diego,” said San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “Her championship experience and ability to contribute on both sides of the ball make her a strong addition to the Wave and we’re excited to support her development as she takes this next step in her
career.”
Van Zanten has featured at the international level multiple times, most recently for the Jamaica’s senior national team, the Reggae Girlz, against England in a 7-0 loss and the. Van Zanten also has an older sister also on the Reggae Girlz and in the NWSL, Kiki Van Zanten, with the Houston Dash.
“The growth (Wave) showed over the past few years is really exciting as a player who’s looking to develop in her first year in the pros,” said M. Van Zanten. “The location is unbeatable, and there’s just so many good things that I’ve heard about San Diego and I can’t wait to join.”
Van Zanten is the first announced signing by the Wave this offseason. The Southern California is expected to announce more moves ahead of the January transfer window in the coming days as the club needs to add important depth across the entire roster.
