Manchester United Women is on the move in the transfer market, announcing two midseason reinforcements on Monday.
Sweden international Hannah Lundkvist and Germany goalscorer Lea Schuller were both unveiled by the club in a (potentially incidental?) reveal interview, with Lundkvist’s announcement going up first but Schuller standing clearly alongside her new teammate before her own announcement was published.
Lundkvist, 23, joins United from San Diego Wave, where she spent two seasons after a three-year stint at Atletico Madrid. The right back has been a full international for Sweden since 2022, picking up 17 caps for the side.
“I am really excited to be here; Manchester United is a club with an amazing history. You can feel how much they have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League,” Lundkvist said in her club announcement. “Speaking with Marc and the coaches confirmed all of the great things I have heard about the culture of the team here. I cannot wait to get started and help the group to achieve more success.”
Her experience and promise to improve offer a bit more balance at right back, where Jayde Riviere has held down the position as the only natural option since Ona Batlle’s departure for Barcelona in 2023.
Schuller, 28, joins United from German giants Bayern Munich, where she has played since 2020. She bagged 103 goals in 180 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarian side, and emerged as a prolific scorer for the German national team as well. She has 54 goals in 82 caps since making her international first team debut in 2017.
“From the first conversations that I had with Marc and the club, the ambitions of everyone here were very clear. I still have so much that I want to achieve in my career, and I know that Manchester United is the perfect club to join,” Schuller said. “I feel that the team’s style of football will really suit my game, I hope my qualities and experience can help us to achieve our aims both in England and in the Champions League.”
The forward joins the Reds at a time when the club has struggled for goals from the forward line. Melvine Malard leads the team with five goals, followed by Jess Park with four and Ella Toone level with center forward Elisabeth Terland on three for the season.
The club are reportedly still looking to make a key midfield signing, per Sully from centredevils.
