By Thursday this week Ibrahima Konate will be entitled to speak to potentially interested overseas clubs about a free transfer.

Liverpool signed the Frenchman back in 2021 from RB Leipzig for £35m - with Konate rising to become one of the best centre-backs around.

Last season he starred alongside Virgil van Dijk as the Reds won the Premier League title. But his Anfield future in truth has been in doubt since before the end of the 2024/25 season.

Sporting director Richard Hughes has been locked in contract talks with the 26-year-old for over a year - without a breakthrough.

Konate's contract countdown

Liverpool will be in competition with foreign clubs for their OWN player later this week - as from January 1 2026 he will be free to discuss a Bosman deal elsewhere.

Previously it’s been reported that the France international would be keen on joining Real Madrid as his first-choice destination - while other clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Inter are all thought to be keen.

But Madrid look to have moved on from Konate - with Defensa Central now detailing exactly why they the Spanish capital club have moved away.

It was chief scout Juni Calafat who pulled the plug on the deal for Konate - who is too error-prone according to the Madrid exec.

Madrid think Konate is too error-prone

“A report from Real Madrid's head scout has been key to abandoning the transfer,” the report reads.

“The report acknowledges the player's physical attributes but also notes his inconsistency and lack of focus, which leads him to make "serious mistakes."

“His inconsistent performances and lapses in concentration haven't gone down well at Real Madrid,” the report continues.

“They believe he could pose significant problems and that Konaté would need to bring stability and experience.”

While Konate has endured some difficult moments this season he has been integral as the Reds have recovered their composure in recent weeks.

Liverpool need to get Konate renewal sorted soon

Madrid therefore will be making a big error in pulling out of a deal for Konate - leaving Liverpool in pole position to sign him up to a contract extension.

It’s not believed that Konate has got Bayern or Inter in mind for a next destination - but Liverpool may well have to pay attention to PSG.

But the last couple of seasons have proven that Konate is in the right place for the next stage of his career. Let’s hope the two sides come to an agreement soon.
