Six LSU-bound Ole Miss coaches may not be available for CFP Semifinal

Six LSU-bound Ole Miss coaches might not be available for the Rebels' CFP Semifinal matchup against Miami next week. Here's the latest.

As Ole Miss pulled off the greatest victory in recent program history, it was hard to think about much else other than how fascinating it is to witness this new era of college football. Others, however, there's a bigger picture as the Ole Miss and LSU coaching drama continues.

When Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU, he took a slew of Ole Miss assistants with him. Kiffin is in Baton Rouge, but the assistant coaches have been working double-duty, getting their start at LSU while coaching Ole Miss in the playoff.

Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger spoke with Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter shortly after the Rebels’ win over Georgia on Thursday night, asking whether the six LSU-bound assistant coaches who have been coaching Ole Miss will continue to do so for the team’s CFP semifinal matchup.

“I don’t know,” Carter responded. “We’re going to celebrate tonight and get ready for Arizona in the morning."

Those six assistants include: offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., tight ends coach Joe Cox, receivers coach George McDonald, inside receivers coach Sawyer Jordan, quarterbacks coach Dane Stevens, and running backs coach Kevin Smith.

It’s the vast majority of Ole Miss’s offensive staff, and the team’s chances of toppling the Miami Hurricanes next Thursday will hinge largely on those coaches’ availability. The problem is that the NCAA Transfer Portal opened Friday morning, and those staffers are also needed in Baton Rouge to support recruiting efforts there.

It leaves them in a strange limbo, one they’ve already been in for two rounds of playoff prep. To give context for just how different things are for these coaches, Weis is reportedly already back in Baton Rouge, arriving Friday morning — just 12 hours after winning the Sugar Bowl. Whether he’ll make his way back to Oxford to prepare for the Fiesta Bowl is still unknown, but given the clear animosity between Carter and Kiffin, it’s hard to see a world where things end cleanly.
