Transfer visits start today

The Morning Commute for Monday, December 29, 2025.

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about transfers. Because when aren’t we talking about transfers.

Starting today, we’re going to see a slew of transfers start to file through Columbia, Mo. And it wouldn’t be surprising if we see commitments follow soon after.

After the portal kicked open on Friday, it only took a day or so before commitments started coming through, with some of the big names in the portal — Josh Hoover, Drew Mestemaker — already picking their next homes. Mizzou has been actively involved in the QB market, and may already have found next year’s starter. But they’re also busy recruiting receivers and linemen, many of whom will begin their visits today through the end of this week.

We’ve got a portal tracker up on the main site, which we’re going to try and keep updated daily. But you’re much more likely to get the latest news and rumors over on Rock M+, where we’ve got a visit tracker and a forum for all announcements, commentary, etc. So go sign up and join the conversation! Otherwise, we’ll keep you abreast of news as soon as we get it confirmed.

But that’s the thing about this year’s Southeastern Conference, it’s not like last year. The rest of the league is as down as the Tigers are. Maybe none of them are carrying a 43 point lopsided loss on their resume, but if you get to Selection Sunday the committee rarely looks at the margin of the wins and losses. Just who did you beat, and where did you beat them? Missouri logged their first quadrant one victory of the year. And don’t look now but last year they were going into their second SEC game with the same number of Q1 wins… just one.

It’ll take some more convincing to get me back on board. One game at a time.

Against one of the top scoring defenses in the nation, the Tigers had one of their worst offensive performances in recent memory, shooting 19-of-64 from the field; their 29.7% clip was their lowest of the season. They also shot 5-of-28 from 3-point range, marking the first time they’ve shot under 20% from beyond the arc since Feb. 2014.

Hmmmm. Those numbers. They seem sub-optimal.

[Mack] Mauger received a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed in the bracket. He controlled his first bout against Ostin Blanchard (NDSU) to an 8-0 major decision win before defeating Bowen Downey by a 5-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Mauger defeated both the No. 2 and No. 1 seeds, respectively, on his way to the title, including a huge upset against No. 13 Kysen Terukina in the finals.

It’s nice to see Brian Smith’s Fighting Tigers get back on the right side of the scoresheet.

Karen is still at work on her recap from Mizzou Gym’s season opening victory over Iowa State, so be on the lookout for that today. The Tigers will enter Monday ranked no. 2 nationally despite counting a fall on beam. Incredible stuff from Shannon Welker’s squad.
