The Horned Frogs nab a top-tier specialist and another LA Tech transfer.
The TCU Horned Frogs are prioritizing special teams help through the transfer portal, locking down a commitment from left-footed Louisiana Tech punter/kicker John Hoyet Chance. A redshirt freshman from Shreveport, Louisiana, Chance was named an All-Conference USA Second Team honoree as well as a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2025. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder spent two years at Louisiana Tech, punting the ball 66 times with a 47.3 yards per attempt average over 14 games played.
Chance, who has a career-long punt of 72 yards, recorded 33 punts of 50-plus yards and downed 28 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line during the 2025 season, which culminated with an 8-5 record and a 23-14 win over Coastal Carolina in the Independence Bowl. Chance also handled kickoffs for the Bulldogs, posting 60 touchbacks on 67 kickoff attempts (89.6 percent) over two seasons. As a kicker, Chance went 4-for-7 on field goals with a long of 55 yards. He’ll replace Ethan Craw, TCU’s starting punter over the last two seasons, who averaged 41.9 yards per attempt with 31 punts downed inside the 20 on 88 attempts in his time with the Horned Frogs.
Chance is the second Louisiana Tech player to choose TCU in this portal cycle, following safety Jacob Fields. He’s also the fourth overall player to pick the Horned Frogs, joining Fields as well as Harvard quarterback Jaden Craig and Oklahoma State offensive guard Noah McKinney. Redshirt junior Easton Black is the only punter on the current TCU roster eligible to return next season. TCU will also welcome in three-star recruit Zachary Hays.
