Manchester United and protesting fans have been a common sight over the last couple of decades owing to the Glazer family ownership of the club.
Recent action
The crux of the issue is that, in spite of Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe taking the reins at United, certain fans feel little has changed.
Both the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) and the 1958 group have had serious issues with how the club is being run. MUST carried out a survey just over a year ago, which highlighted that numerous fans were unhappy with a range of ways the club was being run, most commonly the staff and economic cuts that dominated the period.
The 1958 group has also been active in expressing their distrust of the current owners. The protest organisation planned action against the rising cost of tickets last season.
They also joined forces with FC United of Manchester and protested at one of their games.
The group has also moved on from solely targeting the Glazers and now also view Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos as targets of their campaign.
United fans also showed their displeasure at Turf Moor on Wednesday, when a fan held up a sign that read “Jim can’t fix this” after the dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim earlier in the week.
New protest confirmed
The Manchester Evening News reports that, “Manchester United supporters’ group The 1958 have called for a vote of no confidence against the club’s owners, chief executive Omar Berrarda and director of football Jason Wilcox, in fresh protest plans.”
The action will take place ahead of United’s home game against Fulham on 1st February.
The 1958 released a statement asserting, “it has been an extraordinary and deeply troubling few days at Manchester United. On the pitch, we are watching mediocre performances from an average team drifting without identity, direction, or ambition. Off it, the chaos is even worse.”
They raised concern that Amorim was not sacked for his poor results but for a heated exchange with Wilcox, someone they describe as “a man with just nine months’ experience as a Director of Football at Southampton.”
CEO Omar Berrarda was also singled out for his role in events and the group claimed, “We are once again witnessing Manchester United being run by executives learning on the job, at the expense of results, stability, and credibility.”
The statement finally reads, “Manchester United is now a toxic partnership where fans are getting the worst of both worlds.”
“WE CALL FOR A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN THE OWNERSHIP, BERRADA AND WILCOX.”
