What’s next for Zach Wilson? The quarterback reflects on his season with the Dolphins

Wilson was passed over for rookie Quinn Ewers and will become a free agent in March.

With the 2025 NFL regular season officially over, Zach Wilson’s time as a Miami Dolphin has likely come to an end.

The former No. 2 overall pick out of BYU joined the Dolphins last offseason when he signed a one-year deal. He had spent the previous season as the Denver Broncos’ third-string quarterback.

“Obviously, I came here with Tua as the primary starter,” Wilson told the Palm Beach Post on Thursday. “My goal here was, if I got a chance to get on the field ― obviously you never wish for anyone to get injured, but if by means that happened ― to have an opportunity to go out there and play. That was kind of what I expected. Obviously, I wish I could have played, but I understand how the season goes sometimes."

Zach Wilson’s playing time with the Dolphins

Wilson appeared in just four games, only completing six passes for 32 yards for the Dolphins this season.

In March, then-head coach Mike McDaniel said the Dolphins’ signing of Wilson over a more experienced backup was a “direct, calculated target,” as the Deseret News previously reported.

“Well, to be quite frank,” McDaniel said, “it’s an inexact science, but we thought that he was the best option for us.”

Then the Dolphins drafted Quinn Ewers out of Texas in the seventh round.

Wilson was still the backup for the majority of the season. But when the Dolphins decided to bench starter Tua Tagovailoa with three games left in the season, Miami chose to start Ewers over Wilson.

Following the news, Wilson told the Miami Herald that he was “frustrated” and “maybe a little confused as well” with the decision, as the Deseret News reported.

On Thursday, Wilson said he loved his time in Miami, and he was complimentary of the coaching staff, specifically McDaniel and quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell.

“They do a great job here,” he said. “I think the organization is awesome. I really appreciate the owner as well, I think he does a good job taking care of all the guys. I think Mike does a great job, especially from the offensive standpoint. I thought we did a lot of really cool stuff. I really enjoyed Coach Bev in the QB room as well.”

But with a new general manager and head coach leading the organization soon, Wilson will likely have to move on.

The Dolphins fired McDaniel Thursday, and ESPN reported Friday that the team is hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan as its new general manager after parting ways with Chris Grier on Halloween.

What’s next for Zach Wilson?

Wilson will become a free agent in March and hopes to find an opportunity to be a starter again.

Quarterbacks who were previously labeled a “bust” have found success with new teams recently, such as Daniel Jones with the Indianapolis Colts and Sam Darnold with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks.

Their success could convince a team to give Wilson another chance as a starter.

“Of course, I would love to start somewhere,” Wilson told the Post. ”Obviously, I don’t know what that looks like. I don’t know if I’ll have that opportunity or not yet, but I’m willing to compete wherever I end up and try to just put myself in the best position possible.”
