The Hokies add a potential starting left tackle.
For all of those fans worried about Virginia Tech’s offensive line, relax. On Thursday, head coach James Franklin landed a big-time addition when Logan Howland said he was heading to the Hokies.
Howland, a 6-foot-6, 322-pound tackle from Princeton, New Jersey, played high school football at the Hun School before committing to Oklahoma in the class of 2023. He spent three seasons with the Sooners, redshirting one, and has two years of eligibility remaining.
Howland played one game in 2023 before redshirting. In 2024, he appeared in all 13 games, making six starts — all at left tackle. This past season, Howland played in OU’s first five games, making three starts, before he suffered a season-ending injury.
Howland brings SEC experience to Blacksburg. And there is a clear need at tackle. Howland would be the leading contender to start at left tackle for the Hokies in 2026. Johnny Garrett could either move to right tackle or serve as Virginia Tech’s swing tackle. The Hokies signed a large offensive line class, but most will redshirt in 2026. Howland, who is healthy now, appears to be a lock to start at one of the tackle spots.
Virginia Tech remains active in the transfer portal and will probably look to add another offensive lineman, preferably a tackle.
Howland’s commitment also strengthens the Hokies’ ties in New Jersey. In the 2026 recruiting class, Franklin signed two offensive linemen from New Jersey. Howland is also the 11th player the Hokies have added from the portal — and counting.
