Syracuse’s own defensive version of Kyler Murray
The Syracuse Orange picked up another Toledo transfer from the portal. Rockets defensive back Amare Snowden announced on his Instagram that he is committed to the Orange. His Instagram bio indicated that he’ll play safety for Syracuse. Snowden will have two years of eligibility left.
Toledo’s website doesn’t show Snowden featuring for any games with the Rockets in his lone season with the program. He previously transferred from Wisconsin, where he saw two games of action in two years. Snowden also joined Toledo’s baseball team as a left-handed pitcher when he transferred to the Rockets. He didn’t appear in any games for Toledo either on the diamond.
Snowden was a four-star rated recruit by Rivals coming out of Roseville High School in Michigan. He was a consensus top-15 player in the state. He was a First-team All State player for football and still batted over .400 in baseball as a junior in high school.
Snowden is the first defensive secondary player to commit to the Orange from the transfer portal. While Syracuse had a number of secondary players enter the transfer portal, a large majority of them were primary cornerbacks. The only safety into the portal from the Orange was Jalil Martin. Syracuse does have to replace key senior talent from the safety room in Duce Chestnut, Devin Grant and Berry Buxton III.
Snowden becomes the second Toledo player to follow Vince Kehres from the Rockets to the Orange. Kehres was Toledo’s defensive coordinator but became Syracuse’s defensive coordinator after Elijah Robinson was moved off the role. Robinson subsequently left the Orange and rejoined Texas A&M as its defensive coordinator. Toledo linebacker Chris D’Appolonia is the other Rocket to make the move from the Rockets to the Orange.
Snowden is the fifth defensive player and 12th player to transfer to Syracuse. Along with D’Appolonia, he joins Boise State/Glendale CC wide receiver Zamondre Merriweather, South Carolina tight end Michael Smith, LSU running back Ju’Juan Johnson, Miami (OH) wide receiver Cole Weaver, Jackson State running back Ahmad Miller, Georgia State defensive tackle Jartavius Flounoy, Florida State wide receiver Elijah Moore, UT Martin edge rusher Keyshawn Johnson, Maryland defensive lineman Dillan Fontus and Kennesaw State QB Amari Odom.
The transfer portal remains open for entry until January 15th. Players must enter their names into the portal before the deadline. Schools can still sign players after the deadline as long as the player is in the portal before the deadline.
