Hyun-seok Hong set for Pro League return from Mainz 05

HLN are reporting that Hyun-seok Hong is set to return to the Pro League. The South Korean midfielder will be loaned back to Gent from Mainz 05, with no purchase option being included as part of the deal. Hong only joined Mainz from Gent in 2024 but has spent the first half of this year on loan in Ligue 1 with Nantes. Yet after just six appearances in France with no goals or assists, not aided by an injury suffered in October, he has returned to Mainz before his return to Gent is confirmed.

It is no surprise that Gent are keen for the Mainz man to return. During his two and a bit seasons with the club, Hong scored 18 goals in 104 games and provided 14 assists. Hong was a delight to watch during the time he spent with Gent and with some players leaving on loan or permanently, Gent have opened up a way to bring the 26-year-old back to the Pro League.

With Mainz, Hong played 23 games, scoring no goals but providing one assist. After a year and a half of relative struggles, hopefully the return to Gent will help Hong to rediscover his form.
