Monday Marker: Your guide to City's week ahead

It was one that saw a City side managed by Manuel Pellegrini, navigate a hard-fought 2-0 fourth round extra time victory at St James’ Park.

With City fielding a much-changed side, the Blues travelled to the North East a day shy of Halloween seeking to take a step closer to Wembley.

However, for 90 frustrating minutes there had proved few tricks or indeed treats to get the pulses racing.

All that changed into a superb period of extra time as the Blues – inspired by Alvaro Negredo and strike partner Edin Dzeko – roared into overdrive.

Having been introduced as a second half substitute in place of Stevan Jovetic, Negredo it was who helped break the deadlock on 99 minutes.

The Spaniard, affectionately known as the Beast, demonstrated his predatory instincts, firing home from close range after superb work from Dzeko down the left flank had created the opportunity.

Six minutes later, the advantage was doubled with Newcastle’s spirits all but broken as Dzeko got the reward his fine all-round display merited.

The Bosnian rounded Magpies’ keeper Tim Krul to make it 2-0 after a fine one-two between James Milner and David Silva had created the opening.

Victory earned City a quarter final trip to Leicester and moved us one step nearer to eventually lifting the trophy at Wembley in March 2014 with a 3-1 final win over Sunderland.

And for a delighted Dzeko, it was proof positive of the potent firepower at City’s disposal.

“Negredo is a great player too and I think we work well together,” Dzeko said afterwards.

“Against Newcastle, we got the chance to show what we can do,” he said. “Some of us hadn’t played in the last few games but we proved in that game that we deserve to play.

“The same can be said for Sergio Aguero and Jovetic. There are four strikers and any of us can play.

“We all worked very hard in pre-season and I think we deserved to win.

“We want to get to the final in this competition – that’s definitely our target.”

Dzeko and his City colleagues went on to prove more than as good as their word!
