Michigan Football hires new strength and conditioning coach

Here’s a look at who is Michigan’s new strength and conditioning coach.

The Michigan Wolverines have a new strength and conditioning coach.

Per the University of Michigan Athletics staff directory, Michigan has hired Doug Elisaia as director of strength and conditioning.

Elisaia has been at Utah since 2006 with new Michigan head coach, Kyle Whittingham. Utah teams under Whittingham have been known for their strength and physicality, and Elisaia was a big part of that vision. Earlier this month, Whittingham talked about how important the strength program is to the success of a team.

“I think it starts with the weight room,” Whittingham said. “The offseason program is so critical, and you’ve got to have the right guy running the strength program, which we feel we’re going to. And that’s where a lot of the mental toughness and the work ethic and all that begins.”

Elisaia replaced Justin Tress, who spent two seasons as strength coach after Ben Herbert left for the Los Angeles Chargers. Michigan was physically dominated against top competition this season, and its conditioning was not up to snuff. This was apparent in losses to Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, and Texas. Elisaia’s presence should get Michigan back on track.
