Max Alford, ex-BYU LB, transferring to Michigan football

Max Alford previously played LB for defensive coordinator Jay Hill, how with Michigan football, at BYU. Alford has 63 tackles in three seasons.

At long last, Michigan football has added a linebacker to its mix.

Former BYU linebacker Max Alford has committed to the Wolverines, he announced on social media on Monday, Jan. 12. He joins former BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill, who holds that position in Ann Arbor.

The commitment was first reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3, and reposted by Alford as his announcement.

Iowa State Cyclones' wide receiver Xavier Townsend (4) breaks a tackle from BYU Cougars linebacker Max Alford (30) as running for a first down after making a catch during the first quarter at Jack Trice Stadium on Oct. 25, 2025, in Ames, Iowa.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker played in 10 games for BYU this season in a backup role, recording 21 tackles (including two for loss) and one sack. He had 63 tackles and one sack across three seasons in college (after beginning at Utah State) and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Alford is now the 11th player that Michigan has brought in through the transfer portal this offseason, but the first linebacker. Pittsburgh standout Rasheem Biles was believed headed to Ann Arbor, but he chose Texas instead. U-M then reportedly turned its attention to Cal linebacker Cade Uluave, though it appears credit-transfer issues will stop that.

Michigan's linebacking corps was depleted heading into 2026, with its top four from the 2025 season-opening two deep having departed: Cole Sullivan is headed to Oklahoma, Jimmy Rolder, Jaishawn Barham to the NFL draft and Ernest Hausmann has opted for a medical retirement.
