Is Vincent Kompany making something special?
Bayern Munich’s 8-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg made quite a few headlines for a number of reasons. Not only was it Wolfsburg’s heaviest ever defeat, but it was also quite a significant result for Bayern as well. With the win, Bayern have now officially surpassed their goal difference for the entirety of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season.
With 16 matchdays gone in the 2025/26 season, Bayern currently boast a goal difference of +51, with a whopping 63 goals scored and 12 conceded. In comparison, Bayern’s overall goal difference for 23/24 was +49, with 94 goals scored and 45 conceded. The biggest win in that season was an 8-0 win over SV Darmstadt 98.
Bayern still have a little way to go until they match their tally for last season, which was +67, but even that is a mere +16 goals away. Back then, Bayern’s biggest wins were spread out over a series of five-goal wins, against Holstein Kiel, Werder Bremen, VfL Bochum, and TSG Hoffenheim.
In the past two seasons, Bayern recorded 94 and 99 goals, respectively, so they need another 30 odd goals to reach that record. It is quite interesting that the worst season in recent memory was only five goals off a title-winning season. (Author’s Note: Juppel was cooking something, wasn’t he?)
It remains to be seen how Bayern will play out the rest of the season. The current record for most goals scored in a single Bundesliga season is 101 goals, set by Bayern themselves in 1971/72. Purely judging from the metrics up until now, that record could be broken this year, but Vincent Kompany and his team will do well to stay grounded and approach one game at a time.
