Game Preview

The Lakers are back home on the second night of a back-to-back and host the Atlanta Hawks at Crypto.com Arena for the first time this season. This is the second matchup this year between the two, with the Hawks beating the Lakers by 20 back on Nov 8 in Atlanta.

The Lakers are looking to bounce back from a crushing 105–101 road loss to the Sacramento Kings on Monday and avoid a four-game skid for the first time this season.

Luka Dončić had his seventh game this season with 40 points in Sacramento, finishing with 42 points, seven rebounds and eight assists on his highest field goal shooting of the season, going 16-for-25 (64%). LeBron James had an explosive start, starting with an alley-oop finish and scoring six of the Lakers' first eight points, finishing the night with 22 points.

The Lakers' inconsistency from beyond the arc continues to haunt them, shooting 22% on just eight made 3s on the night. It was the eighth time this season the Lakers failed to make over 10 3s and the sixth time they shot under 26% from deep (they are 1-5 in those games).

The Lakers are now tied with the Raptors for the worst 3-point percentage in the NBA, averaging 33.8% from 3 per game.

Despite their woes from 3, the Lakers have the second-best field goal percentage in the league. A lot of their high percentage points, coming from Dončić, James and Austin Reaves when he's been healthy, have come from inside the perimeter on two-point buckets. L.A. shot 67% on 33 for 49 from two-point shots against the Kings.

Rui Hachimura was available in Sacramento, but JJ Redick mentioned that he could only play one game of their current back-to-back, being that he's on a "severe" minutes restriction. He's expected to make his return against the Hawks off the bench after missing six straight games with right calf soreness.

His return is a boost for a Lakers team that has lacked size and scoring on the wing with Austin Reaves still sidelined.

Atlanta enters the matchup coming off a 13-point road win over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, pushing to three straight wins.

The Hawks are under a new direction after recently trading Trae Young to the Washington Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. This move opened the door for 24-year-old point-forward Jalen Johnson, who is the NBA's top candidate for Most Improved.

Johnson has been on a tear with Young out for most of the season (before the trade), averaging a triple-double in the whole month of Dec. In 37 games, Johnson has posted 23.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 8.2 assists while shooting 37% from 3 and 52% overall.

The Hawks sit at 20-12 (ninth in the East) on the season and are 13-10 on the road. The Lakers have been awful against teams with size, straight and athleticism. Atlanta doesn't present physicality like the Pistons or Rockets, but carry the other two, with plenty of long and quick forwards at their disposal.

Notable Opponent Ranks Among the NBA

The Hawks have the 17th-rated offense (114.5) and the 14th-rated defense (114.2) in the NBA. Here are their notable rankings this season:

  • 8th in points per game (118.4)
