The New York Yankees just swung a trade for Miami Marlins lefty Ryan Weathers, and it feels like they gave up an awful lot for a pitcher who can't stay healthy.
The New York Yankees finally acquired a starting pitcher on Tuesday night, swinging a trade to land left-hander Ryan Weathers in a trade with the Miami Marlins.
The Yankees surrendered four prospects in the deal, including prized outfielder Dillon Lewis, who has been a rising talent in New York's system. Fellow outfielder Brendan Jones as well as infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus were also sent to the Marlins in the trade.
That seems like an awful lot to give up for Weathers, who made just 24 starts over the last couple of seasons due to rampant injury issues and owns a lifetime 4.93 ERA across 70 big-league appearances and 55 starts.
Weathers was originally selected by the San Diego Padres with the seventh overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft and made his major-league debut with the Padres in 2021. He struggled mightily across two-plus seasons in San Diego before being dealt to Miami midway through 2023.
The 26-year-old did appear to start finding his groove in South Beach, posting a 3.63 ERA across 16 starts in 2024 and showing more promise with a 3.99 ERA through eight starts this past year, but he has yet to throw 100 innings in a single campaign since entering the majors.
Lewis, meanwhile, has surged in the Yankees' farm system and was recently named the team's eighth-best prospect. Some even feel he had the edge over Spencer Jones.
The 22-year-old slashed .237/.321/.445 with 22 home runs and 79 RBI over 527 plate appearances at Single-A in 2025, also stealing 26 bases. And while he probably profiles as a corner outfielder rather than a center fielder, he still possesses solid defensive potential.
Even Jones had been a solid player in New York's organization, managing a .248/.377/.403 slash line across two minor-league campaigns. He tallied a .365 OBP in Double-A in 2025.
Weather has good stuff. There is no question about it. But his health is a major concern, and even though he showed flashes in South Beach, he still has not lived up to expectations.
The Yankees had been pursuing arms like Freddy Peralta and MacKenzie Gore, but it appears they have settled for Weathers, who is under team control through 2028 and will be earning $1.35 million next season.
Perhaps New York liked the fact that the Loretto, Tn. native comes incredibly cheap. And maybe the Yanks did not want to give up other more highly-regarded prospects in exchange for one of the top hurlers on the trade market.
But if this is all the Yankees were able to muster in terms of adding to their starting rotation, then it definitely rings a bit hollow, especially considering they just gave up Lewis.
