Juventus look to restart contract talks with the USMNT star after negotiations were reportedly stalled out last month.
Since Luciano Spalletti took over as manager at Juventus, Weston McKennie has been one of the Bianconeri’s best players. That’s on top of being a very good player under previous managers no matter how much he’s been bounced in and out of the squad’s present and future plans.
Last we heard, the talks to extend McKennie’s contract have come to a relative standstill. For whatever reason, a player who has done quite well in Turin suddenly had his future at the Allianz Stadium looking in doubt.
That looks to be changing.
According to reports from ilBianconero’s Romeo Agresti and Italian transfer reporter Nico Schira over the last 24 hours, Juventus are set to re-open contract talks wtih McKennie and his camp in the near future. When that will be still remains to be seen, but Juventus are reportedly circling back to contract talks with a player that Spalletti clearly values and somebody who has come to the forefront of the Bianconeri’s success under their new manager over the last two months.
Or, as Agresti posted on social media: “Juve won’t give up and will try to play its cards.”
McKennie’s current contract — one that he signed at the beginning of last season — will expire at the end of June.
Under Spalletti, McKennie has been playing some of his best ball as a Juventus player. Since the beginning of November, McKennie has scored four goals in all competitions, the most recent coming in Juve’s 5-0 thrashing of Cremonese this past Monday night. He has, as seems to be the norm these last few years, done it in a variety of positions, too — which is not a surprise at all.
And as his form has only seemingly gotten better, the calls for McKennie’s contract to be extended by the club have only gotten louder and louder by those who support Juventus.
McKennie reportedly has interest from the three big clubs in Turkey — Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Galatasaray — as well as other clubs around Europe’s top five leagues, according to TuttoJuve’s Mirko Di Natale. But, as he said in a recent interview during an event for his charity, McKennie has made it be known that his desire is to stay in Turin and extend his contract with Juventus. He has maintained that he will leave these types of things up to his agent and he will let negotiations play out as he continues to focus on on-field happenings.
At this point, though, the more McKennie plays like he is right now, the more there will be a call for the club to reward him for being one of the squad’s best players and such a loyal servant as well. Plus, you know that Spalletti’s desire to keep the player beyond this season — which seems pretty much a given at this point — is going to be something that the new-look front office will hopefully try and make happen.
