Forward Tyler Boyd claimed off waivers by LAFC

Los Angeles added another depth forward, bringing on more pace and MLS experience.

Adding a second Nashville SC forward this offseason, LAFC announced Wednesday that the club has claimed Tyler Boyd off waivers. His contract will run through the 2026 season with an option included for 2027.

He had spent the previous two seasons with Nashville, appearing in 26 regular-season matches (14 starts). During that span, Boyd contributed four goals, two assists and started three Concacaf Champions Cup matches.

"Tyler brings valuable experience, attacking quality and a strong mentality to our group," said LAFC Co-President and General Manager John Thorrington. "He has proven throughout his career at club and national team level that he can influence matches in meaningful moments, and we're excited for him to see those qualities as we push toward our goals this season."

Originally from Tauranga, New Zealand, the 31-year-old arrived in MLS for the 2023 season with the LA Galaxy. He had previously spent time playing at Turkish Süper Lig club Beşiktaş, tallying four goals and an assist across 35 appearances.

During his time with the club, he was loaned to another Turkish Süper Lig club in 2021, Sivasspor. Boyd was then loaned to Çaykur Rizespor, marking his third different stint with a club in the league.

Before playing in Turkey, Boyd spent time in Portugal, playing for Portuguese side Vitória S.C.'s B team. He was eventually promoted to Vitória de Guimarães in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and scored one goal across 15 matches.

Boyd played for yet another Turkish Süper Lig club during this time, ultimately being loaned to MKE Ankaragücü in 2019, where he combined for 20 goal contributions (six goals, 14 assists) in 14 starts. Another loan stint with C.D. Tondela, a Portuguese Primeira Liga side (2017-2018), saw him deliver four goals and four assists in 29 matches.

His football career originated during the 2011-2012 season, when he began playing for Waikato FC, a New Zealand First Division team. He then moved up to the Australian A-League with Wellington Phoenix, spending 2012-2015 with the side.

Internationally, Boyd received a special exception to move from the New Zealand National Team to the United States Men's National Team. The forward scored two goals and added 10 assists during his time with the team, making his debut against Venezuela in June of 2019. He has not appeared on the international stage for the United States since the 2019 Concacaf Nations League, where he earned one assist in three games.

Injuries have hindered opportunities for the winger in recent years, with a torn ACL in 2024 causing him to return for only five appearances in the 2025 season. In 2023, he played in all 34 regular-season games for the Galaxy.

Looking to establish a newfound consistency and return to full health, he will take the pitch in Los Angeles for the first time as a member of the Black & Gold. Raised in California, Boyd returns to a familiar place and joins LAFC as the squad looks to piece together a successful first campaign under Marc Dos Santos.
