Latest NFL head coaching hire may lead to Cowboys coach leaving Brian Schottenheimer’s staff – Mauricio Rodriguez, A to Z Sports

Coaching changes are at a fever pitch in the NFL right now, but it’s yet to affect Brian Schottenheimer’s staff going into year two.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer is busy finding his next defensive coordinator, but now his Dallas Cowboys may have to replace another coach on the offensive side of the ball. And they may need to do it very soon.

That’s because on Monday, the Miami Dolphins hired Jeff Hafley as their next head coach, and some believe a position coach on the Cowboys could follow him in order to get a promotion. Let’s break it down.

Steve Shimko could reunite with Hafley

Hafley, who is getting the top job in Miami after two years as defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, needs an offensive coordinator to lead things in the Dolphins. And Cowboys quarterbacks coach Steve Shimko makes a lot of sense for the position.

Shimko coached for Hafley at Boston College from 2020 to 2023. In that span, Shimko went from coaching tight ends, to quarterbacks, and lastly secured a position as offensive coordinator. In December, NFL insider Connor Orr mentioned Shimko as a candidate to be Hafley’s OC wherever the latter ended up at.

Cowboys would miss Shimko

Though not often discussed by the fanbase, Shimko is an important part of Schottenheimer’s staff, and he even is involved in play calling to some capacity, as shown in HBO’s Hard Knocks. In a scene from the Cowboys’ regular season loss to the Detroit Lions, Schottenheimer is shown asking Shimko for plays featuring CeeDee Lamb or George Pickens.

Could Sean McDermott become the next Cowboys defensive coordinator? – Angel Torres, The Cowboys Wire

The Cowboys are still chasing a defense as good as it was under Dan Quinn, who was a former head coach, and could make a similar hire and big splash with fired Bills HC Sean McDermott.

This most recent change, McDermott leaving the Bills after nine seasons, has prompted some to wonder if the former Buffalo head coach would accept an interview for the Cowboys defensive coordinator role.

Sources tell NFL insider Adam Schefter that McDermott intends to continue coaching after being let go from his first head coaching job. With seven openings currently still up for grabs (excluding the Bills job), it is likely that McDermott will interview for at one of those openings.

Dallas is still searching for their next defensive guru and if McDermott doesn’t land the big chair, perhaps he’d take on a coordinator role. He worked his way up the coaching ladder on the defensive side of the ball. The caveat is that the Cowboys don’t appear to be searching for anyone who could jump ship for a head coach opening in the next couple of seasons.

Updates: 3 assistants to coach Senior Bowl – Staff, DallasCowboys.com

The Cowboys always have strong ties to the Senior Bowl, and this year will be no different.

Next week, NFL front offices, scouting departments and coaching staffs will all converge on Mobile, Alabama for the 2026 Senior Bowl, where some of college football’s up and coming draft prospects will look to improve their draft stock with strong performances in front of teams that could draft them.

There will be three Cowboys assistants that will be looking to help them on the National team’s coaching staff. Secondary/DBs coach David Overstreet III will serve as the defensive coordinator, with assistant DL coach Bryan Bing and defensive assistant/quality control coach Tanzel Smart will both coach the defensive line.

Not only does it serve as another coaching opportunity for Dallas’ three assistants, and maybe in some bigger roles, but it gives the Cowboys valuable insight on the players in each position room as well with their own coaches having been around the players in a football setting. With two first round picks coming up, both of which could be defensive players, it’s a more up close and personal look at prospects than some teams will be able to get in their pre-draft process.

Cowboys’ tight end room was one of its best in 2025 – Richard Paolinelli, Inside The Star

The Cowboys have room to get more out of their tight ends, but have the young talent to do so already in hand.

The recently concluded season was also the first since 2020 when the Cowboys only needed three tight ends for the entire year.

The three players – Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, and Brevyn Spann-Ford – even managed to total 22 starts. The Cowboys’ offense juggled its starting lineup weekly, leading to five games started with two tight ends on the field.

With all three signed for the 2026 season, the Cowboys are set at tight end. Hopefully, they won’t spend one of their draft picks in April on another one.

Here’s how the trio did in 2025.

Jake Ferguson

Ferguson is signed through the end of the 2029 season. He matched his career high in targets with 102 and set a career high with 82 catches.

While his receiving yards, 600, was 161 yards short of his 2023 career high, Ferguson set a career high in touchdowns with eight this year.

Ferguson did play in all 17 games, but only started in 10. But that was more scheme than any injury holding him back.

Dallas Cowboys will play both NFC Championship Game teams in 2026 – RJ Ochoa, Blogging The Boys

If 2026 is going to be the year that ends “The Streak”, the Cowboys are going to have to go through teams that have broken through to the championship game in 2025.

Here’s the thing. The Seahawks and Rams are rivals within the NFC West and the NFC East plays against that division in 2026. Dallas will visit both Seattle and Los Angeles in 2026 so it goes without saying that these will each be difficult games in all likelihood.

All told the Cowboys will play seven games against playoff teams from this season:

  • Eagles (home)
  • Eagles (away)
  • 49ers (home)
  • Jaguars (home)
  • Seahawks (away)
  • Rams (away)
  • Texans (away)

We will see how it all goes.
