A serious disciplinary process has been set in motion following the controversial incident involving Vinicius Jr. during the Copa del Rey clash between Albacete and Real Madrid.
According to a detailed report from Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish Football Federation has formally opened disciplinary proceedings after a complaint was submitted by the referee’s delegate.
The incident occurred in the final moments of the round of 16 match. After Albacete scored their third goal and celebrations erupted both on the pitch and in the stands, a banana peel was thrown towards the Real Madrid bench.
The object was reportedly aimed in the direction of Vinicius Jr., a player who has repeatedly been subjected to racist abuse in Spanish football.
So what now?
Because the episode was officially reported by the referee’s delegate, the matter was immediately escalated.
As such, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided to open an extraordinary investigation.
This means an investigating judge has now been appointed and will be responsible for gathering all relevant information.

This includes reviewing match reports, witness statements, audiovisual evidence, and any other material deemed necessary to establish the facts.
The judge has a maximum period of one month to reach a conclusion. Once the investigation is complete, two paths are possible.
Firstly, the case could be dismissed if there is deemed to be insufficient evidence to justify a sanction.
Alternatively, the judge may propose disciplinary action. Should that happen, Albacete would be formally notified and given ten working days to submit their defence before a final ruling is issued.
According to the outlet, the most severe scenario would involve the partial closure of the Carlos Belmonte Municipal Stadium.
Other possible outcomes include a financial fine accompanied by a formal warning, particularly if the incident is classified as a serious disturbance of public order rather than a direct act of racism.
