The Bayern Munich midfielder has been in sensational creative form, and his numbers suggest that football history could soon be rewritten.
Michael Olise targets Lionel Messi’s long-standing assist record
Olise currently has 21 assists to his name, a total that already ranks him among Europe’s most productive creators. With Bayern Munich still set to play at least 20 more matches across all competitions, the Frenchman has a genuine opportunity to challenge Messi’s all-time mark.
The record was set by Lionel Messi during the 2011–12 season, when the Argentine superstar notched 30 assists for Barcelona in one of the most complete campaigns ever produced.
Juan Mata followed closely with 29 assists in 2012–13 for Chelsea, while Kevin De Bruyne reached 27 assists for Wolfsburg in 2014–15.
Michael Olise’s rise under FC Bayern Munich’s high-tempo system
If Olise maintains his current rhythm, he could become the first player in over a decade to eclipse Messi’s single-season total.
Operating as Bayern’s creative heartbeat, the 24-year-old has flourished under the club’s aggressive, possession-heavy approach that maximises his vision and timing in the final third.
His combination of precision passing, close control, and quick decision-making has turned him into one of the Bundesliga’s standout performers.
Should he sustain this form, Olise won’t just join football’s most elite company, he could end the season as the man who broke one of Messi’s most remarkable records.
