WWE is reportedly exploring a potential return for “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as the company enters the most critical stretch of the 2026 calendar.
According to WrestleVotes Radio, internal discussions have taken place regarding the Hall of Famer making an appearance in the “very near future.”
This timeline aligns perfectly with the Royal Rumble on January 31 and the subsequent “Road to WrestleMania”. While the specific nature of the appearance remains under wraps, the timing has sparked intense speculation.
Since his successful in-ring return against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38, Austin has maintained a positive relationship with WWE management. The “Texas Rattlesnake” has frequently noted in recent interviews that he remains in excellent physical condition, particularly following successful knee replacement surgery, and is open to creative pitches that “make sense”.
“I’m feeling good. My knees are feeling good… I can still do it, I just don’t know if I want to,” Austin recently remarked regarding his in-ring capability while speaking on Insight With Chris Van Vliet.
The potential appearance could serve several creative functions, ranging from a one-off nostalgia segment to a high-profile guest referee role. Interestingly, this news follows a missed opportunity at WrestleMania XL, where filming commitments reportedly prevented Austin from participating in the Night 2 main event—a spot that was ultimately filled by The Undertaker.
As the 2026 Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, approaches, Austin’s name has also surfaced in discussions involving Cody Rhodes, who is entering the 30-man match intending to match Austin’s record of three Royal Rumble victories.
Whether Austin appears to oversee a match, confront a star, or enter the Rumble itself, the return of the industry’s most iconic figure would provide a massive boost to the build toward WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
