  • Michael Irvin is setting the record straight after some speculated his high energy on the sidelines during games was thanks to cocaine
  • The former Dallas Cowboys star and University of Miami alum said his enthusiasm during the school's championship run was not aided by the drug
  • Irvin said on his The White House podcast that he hasn't "partaken in 20 years"

Along the sidelines during the University of Miami’s national championship run, Michael Irvin’s enthusiasm for his alma mater was seemingly boundless — but he adamantly denied that his antics were aided by a certain illegal drug.

"I'm right there in front of the camera for five hours," Irvin, 59, said on the second episode of his The White House podcast on Thursday, Jan. 22. "So, after the game, I do a little belt thing, and everybody sends me all this — 'Man, Mike, right now, he coked up right now! You all on coke!' I'm like, 'Wait a minute, y'all. First of all, y'all know damn well coke don't last five hours.' "

Irvin, who played for The U from 1984-1987 under coach Jimmy Johnson (who later became his coach with the Dallas Cowboys), was a fixture along Miami’s sidelines during the College Football Playoff.

The Canes — the 10th seed in the playoffs — traveled to Texas and beat No. 7 A&M in College Station before defeating No. 2 Ohio State in Arlington. They dispatched No. 6 Ole Miss in New Orleans to secure their spot in the title game.

And along the way, Irvin ran animatedly along the sidelines, crouched on all fours and took off his belt in a tribute to his school’s success.

At one point, he even kissed head coach Mario Cristobal, much to the latter’s seeming chagrin.

But in the wake of the team’s 27-21 loss to Indiana in the championship game on Monday, Jan. 19, Irvin wants to make one thing clear: "I hadn't partaken in 20 years, but if you got some five-hour stuff, let me know,” he joked to co-host former NFL star Brandon Marshall and retired-NBA forward Michael Beasley, drawing hysterical laughter.

He added, “That's just what I'm saying, like stop it. Stop saying this stuff."

"Whenever you sitting your a-- at home high, you want to think everybody else is high," Irvin continued. "Because your a-- is high! I understand that, but the reality is everybody ain't high."

And since Miami came up short of the title, Irvin has been anything but high, he told Cam’ron on his It Is What It Is podcast.

“I was depressed after the game, I’m not gonna lie,” Irvin said. “I was depressed. Everybody was calling me, saying, ‘Let’s go out and party.’ I said, ‘I ain’t going nowhere.’ ”

He added, “As I’m trying to leave the stadium, all the Indiana fans, ‘Mr. Irvin, I’m a Cowboys fan, can we take a picture?’ Hell nah, I ain’t taking a picture with y’all.’ ”
