Autoweek’s Deb Williams Recognized by NASCAR

The Hall of Fame honors Williams with the Squier-Hall Award for Media Excellence.

Deb Williams, a veteran auto racing writer/editor and a correspondent for Autoweek, received the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence Friday as part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Williams began covering racing for the Mountaineer newspaper in Waynesville, North Carolina, while she was in high school in 1976. She later graduated from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City and began a long career in journalism. She has worked for United Press International, Sunbelt Video, NASCAR Scene, numerous magazines, and media relations organizations in motorsports. She currently covers NASCAR for Autoweek.

In addition to the Squier-Hall Award, named for racing broadcasters Ken Squier and Barney Hall, Williams has won the North Carolina Motorsports Association Jim Hunter Memorial Media Award, the National Motorsports Press Association’s Joe Littlejohn Award, and the American Motorsports Media Award of Excellence.

She also is a member of the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame and has written or contributed to several auto racing books.

A resident of Concord, North Carolina, Williams is an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
