Keyshawn Summerville surpasses Ron Banks as school's all-time scoring leader in 61-56 win.
PORTLAND — Keyshawn Summerville has accomplished plenty during his four-year varsity career at Sexton.
The senior all-state guard added to that with a major individual accomplishment.
Summerville became the all-time leading scorer in Sexton basketball history while helping the J-Dubbs remain perfect in CAAC White play with a 61-56 victory over Portland on Friday, Jan. 23.
Summerville had a game-high 22 points and now has 1,714 career points to pass the previous scoring record held by Ron Banks.
"It feels great but I couldn't do it without my teammates," Summerville said. "When I was younger I never thought I'd be able to do something like this. It came true tonight and I'm super blessed and super glad to do it with these guys behind me."
The school career scoring record was the second major achievement Summerville has had at Portland High School. He surpassed 1,000 career points during a game at Portland on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025.
Summerville surpassed the milestone with his 20th point, which came on a fast-break layup.
Beings able to have his name among other greats in program history as a top scorer was special to Summerville.
"I have a lot of family that comes here," Summerville said. "There's a lot of greats that walk through Sexton and it feels good to be up there with them."
DeLeon Dearing is in his third-year as Sexton's varsity coach and has enjoyed watching Summerville handle his business on the court and become a leader for the program.
"He's a wonderful person," Dearing said. "He got the 1,000-point trophy and the next day he brought it up to the school and said coach put this in the trophy case. They gave him a trophy for the Moneyball MVP and it's in the trophy case at the school. He don't want it. He don't like the attention. He just puts hard work in."
Summerville had 14 points in the first half and had a big second quarter while helping Sexton (12-2, 8-00 take the lead for good. Kivon Brown added 14 points for the J-Dubbs, who now have a three-game lead atop the CAAC White.
