The Manchester City defence has been ravaged by injury. Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol both went down with injuries in their team’s 1-all draw with Chelsea earlier this month. Their absence has hurt Pep Guardiola’s side. Max Alleyne and Abdukodir Khusanov have both been forced to step up in their absence. Both players are young and have done the best they can in a difficult situation. Unfortunately for Max Alleyne he made two mistakes which cost his team against Bodø/Glimt. It is likely that he will be replaced in Manchester City’s defence by City’s new signing Marc Guehi today against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Marc Guehi’s debut feels like an important moment in Manchester City’s season. The England international is expected to make an immediate impact on Manchester City’s defence. He is more than capable of doing so, and if he does, Pep Guardiola’s side should be a stronger proposition at the back almost immediately.

Marc Guehi should be able to slot seamlessly into the Manchester City defence.

After signing for Manchester City from Crystal Palace, Marc Guehi arrives at Manchester City as a ready-made defender. Guehi established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League during his time at Crystal Palace. There is no reason why Guehi cannot quickly make his presence felt in Manchester City’s defence. All of the best attributes of Guehi’s game look to be well-suited to life in a Pep Guardiola side.

In possession, Marc Guehi is a composed player and he has all the necessary traits to be a Manchester City centre-back. Guehi has proven for England and Crystal Palace that he is adept with the ball at his feet. What catches the eye with Guehi’s work in possession is his ability to play a long ball across the pitch. Guehi switches the play with ease, and it is easy to see Pep Guardiola tapping into this weapon that Marc Guehi possesses. Given that Guehi prefers to play as the left centre-back in a pairing, his ability to pick out Antoine Semenyo on the right wing, for example, could be of immense value to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Marc Guehi is an exceptional defender. Manchester City are crying out for an experienced centre-back who adds a sense of calm to his team. Guehi is precisely that. He is strong aerially, and uses his body well in aerial duels. That attribute could be crucial against Wolves today. Guehi is strong in a duel and a challenge, and his addition to the City squad should strengthen a City defence that has looked shaky recently.

Final thoughts.

I’m not suggesting that Marc Guehi will debut for Manchester City today and Pep Guardiola’s side will immediately get back to their best. That isn’t realistic. But Guehi’s debut does feel like an important moment in Manchester City’s season. Guehi will be expected to step in and add leadership, poise and quality to a City defence that has struggled recently. The England international is more than capable of doing that job. It would be great if he contribute that today against Wolves.
