Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has sent a rallying call to his teammates to get their act together and return to winning ways against Wolves on Saturday.
The Blues have made a poor start to 2026, having won twice in their last seven games in all competitions as they search for their first Premier League win of the calendar year this weekend in the wake of back-to-back losses to Manchester United and Bodo/Glimt.
City are facing a grave personnel crisis across the pitch but Guardiola’s worries have been somewhat alleviated by the signings of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi – both of whom are in line to start against Wolves at the Etihad Stadium after being ineligible in Norway in midweek owing to UEFA Champions League squad registrations rules.
Bar a 10-1 rout of Exeter in the FA Cup third-round, Pep Guardiola’s side have struggled to find the back of the net in January as doubts resurface on whether a new-look Manchester City group has it in them to stake a claim for silverware as the season progresses.
“We have to do the basics right and win games. It’s the most important thing and where you get energy from. I’m sure we’ll get there,” City midfielder Reijnders said in conversation with the club’s official channels ahead of Saturday’s clash with Wolves.
“We have a lot of qualities. What we showed at the end of 2025 with our streak, we can do that again. We’ve lost a bit of momentum but I’m pretty sure we’ll get it back as quick as possible.”
In the last seven days, Manchester City have put in arguably their worst-ever successive performances in nearly a decade under Guardiola, having been disastrously poor in defeats to Manchester United and Bodo/Glimt.
“We were devastated (to lose to Manchester United), you want to win every derby,” Reijnders added. “We didn’t see it coming how we lost like this.
“We have to keep confidence in ourselves. Luckily, we play every three days and now we have to be ready for our next game against Wolves. We have to keep going.”
Guardiola is expected to make wholesale changes to his starting XI against Wolves, with Semenyo expected to return to the lineup and Guehi in line to be thrown straight in five days after completing a £20 million transfer from Crystal Palace.
City are missing all of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Matheus Nunes, Nico Gonzalez, Savinho at present – with doubts over Jeremy Doku’s fitness after the Belgian did not come on in Norway despite being on the bench.
Nothing less than three points will do for title-chasing City against Wolves, with Arsenal facing a tricky test at home against an in-form Manchester United side on Sunday evening.
