After the biggest game of the season, the Vegas Golden Knights subsequently put together their worst outing.

On Sunday, the Ottawa Senators embraced the NFL spirit and put up a touchdown and extra point on the Golden Knights, defeating them 7-1.

Despite Mitch Marner getting a penalty shot early on, it was the Senators having more jump in the first period. It eventually paid off with Fabian Zetterlund firing a puck off of Kaedan Korczak behind the net to beat Adin Hill to get Ottawa off to a 1-0 start.

The second period would see the Senators take advantage after the Golden Knights missed an opportunity on a 5-on-3 power play. Dylan Cozens would make good on a scoring chance with Hill well out of position to double the Ottawa lead. 18 seconds later, Jordan Spence would beat Hill clean from the point to add to the punishment.

Another mistake allowed Stephen Halliday to push the lead to four goals, and the Golden Knights were in deep trouble.

The third period would start with Cozens and Halliday’s second goals of the game getting past Hill just over two minutes in. Former Golden Knight Nick Cousins would finish the job with the seventh Ottawa goal.

It would not be all bad for the Golden Knights, with Rasmus Andersson scoring his first goal in a Golden Knights jersey, but it was far too little, far too late.

The Andersson goal prevented the worst loss in Golden Knights franchise history. They have lost by six goals only three other times prior to tonight.

The Golden Knights will hope to rebound quickly from this embarrassment when they head to Quebec to face the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
