Santos FC is working to move on Algerian forward Billal Brahimi, who joined on a free transfer in September 2025 but has struggled for playing time.
According to a source familiar with the situation, Santos has received interest from international clubs, including Major League Soccer teams — most notably the Vancouver Whitecaps FC — and Legia Warsaw. Club officials are focusing on an overseas transfer to reduce the financial impact of the player’s contract.
Limited minutes for Billal Brahimi, limited role
Brahimi has made one appearance for Santos FC, coming off the bench in a draw with Red Bull Bragantino. He played 26 minutes—insufficient for a regular role.
The coaching staff believes Brahimi has not met expectations in training or adapted to team tactics.
Financial pressure on Santos FC accelerates the decision
Brahimi reportedly earns BRL 700,000–950,000 per month (approximately C$170,000–C$230,000), a figure considered excessive for his contributions.
The club is weighing a mutual termination or a permanent transfer to reduce payroll in 2026.
MLS appears as a feasible route
Major League Soccer has become a realistic destination. Multiple MLS clubs have submitted formal inquiries, with Vancouver among the most interested parties. Interest from Europe remains active, with Legia Warsaw among the clubs monitoring developments.
Career Background
Before Brazil, Brahimi played mostly in Europe. He came up through Middlesbrough FC’s academy and later joined OGC Nice, where he made over 50 appearances.
His best season was on loan at Le Mans FC, where he scored 12 goals in 34 matches (2020–21). He also played for Angers SCO, Stade Brestois 29, and Sint-Truiden VV.
During the 2022–23 season with Nice, Brahimi featured in 37 matches, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists. He briefly returned to the club in 2025–26 before completing his move to Santos. Internationally, he has earned four caps with the Algeria national football team.
Contract Status
Brahimi remains under contract with Santos through the end of 2026, giving the club a stronger negotiating position when discussing terms of his departure, whether by mutual termination or transfer. This lengthy contract allows Santos to demand favorable terms or a transfer fee, while maintaining flexibility to structure an exit.
Talks are expected to advance in the coming weeks, with a resolution likely before preseason planning begins. For now, the forward continues to train but remains outside the club’s primary plans for the upcoming campaign.
