Monroe County Region high school sports roundup for Jan. 26

Gibraltar Carlson's Jace Starll breaks school records for both 6 and 11 dives; Summerfield, New Boston Huron among girls basketball winners.

GIBRALTAR – One school record wasn’t enough for Jace Starll.

He decided to set two in three days.

The diver broke the Gibraltar Carlson record for a six-dive program on Thursday, Jan. 22 with a score of 291.8 then shattered the 11-dive record in the Downriver Classic on Saturday, Jan. 24 with a score of 443.75.

“Jace has worked exceptionally hard leading up to and during this season to learn bigger dives than he performed last year,” Carlson diving coach Ellen Strawsine said. “He remained dedicated to doing dry-land exercises and basic drills to make small improvements.

“His performance at meets this year have shown how much it his hard work has paid off. Opposing coaches always comment on how nice his form is.”

Jace Starll is congratulated by Gibraltar Carlson diving coach Ellen Strawsine after breaking school records for both the 6 and 11-dive programs.

Both school records were set in 2019 by Todd Taylor II.

“Jace is a dedicated athlete who hopes to compete at the collegiate level next fall and continue to develop as a diver with more and more difficult dives,” said Carlson head coach Amy Hulderman. “He is always up for a challenge and works hard to achieve his goals.”

Starll placed 13th at the Division 2 state finals last season and was named Monroe County Region Diver of the Year.

Owen Keith also was a standout Saturday, winning the butterfly in :53.55 and swimming with Dean Manthei, Owen Lancaster and Jack Dunwoody on the 200 freestyle relay that took second place and qualified for state with a time of 1:33.9.
